Buildings and other man made structures are a running theme through the majority of his personal photographs.

“I find it interesting how we have worked so hard at separating ourselves from the elements and the magic and self awareness that we can derive from them. We have actually tried to protect ourselves from the elements through these structures but ultimately the elements prevail in the ruins that I find everywhere. I can only hope that we will not have to fall to ruin to discover our magic and awareness.”

“When choosing subject matter to paint, I often just rely on my gut feeling, definitely not the head, until it gets to the critical aspects of the creating.  But at first, I listen to the intuitive messages I am receiving from the initial choice of subject. As a result, many times I don’t realize what the painting is saying to me, until I start painting it.  Color, scale and composition all play an important part of the process.  So for me, this was quite a surprise, when I realized that I might be painting pieces of Twitter.  I was painting my own little Twitterville, having the same characteristics of Twitter in many ways, large city, large venue, yet close up in nature, noticing many layers and depths of the scene as Twitter has. Many things happening at once, others ignored, many on their own journey passing others, some dreaming about their future, some barely making it, some deep in thought, philosophical, symbolic nature, some seeking and searching, while others are satisfied with day to day acquaintances .”

Cedar Snags, snowcapped mountains, a full moon and salmon on the barbeque all comprise the essence of a westcoast summer evening. Emerald green glacial rivers, the scent of cedar on a warm summer breeze, and the ever present eagle, are my reminiscing of Bute Inlet. Fun in the sun, blue skies and hours of playtime on a fishing boat with my sons are favorite memories of a high quality weekend at Sonora Lodge, North of Campbell River.

The eagle and the salmon enact a continual struggle for survival in the natural world. The salmon swims deep and keeps close to cover when near the shoreline. The eagle circles high in the sky with a watchful eye. The tides rise and fall, the seasons come and go, yet as the years go by and I continue to enjoy the pleasures of being out on the sea close to the natural rhythm of life.

My great joy is to share this love of nature with family and friends as often as possible. It is important for me to set aside time to recreate and relax. Each year I return to the land of my ancestors to enjoy the gathering of traditional food. Salmon, crab,halibut, herring roe, seaweed, and many other fish are some of the treasures I?find.

The Summer of 2002 was a very special time for me and my boys. We visited our ancestral village of kitkatla and harvested sockeye from our fishing areas. It was a time of recreation and special bonding between father and sons. We visited places familiar to them in stories that I have told hem over the years. They had photos taken of them at Eagle Rock, a well-known site among our people and a favorite playground of my childhood.

We traveled on the MV Western Spirit, a seine boat owned by their Godfather which was also part of many stories the boys recalled. On our journeys we saw many species of birds, animals, and fish. We lived from the sea and played on the land.

There was a new lodge, a floating hotel complete with all the amenities one would expect to find at a fine five star hotel. The boys decided to try to swim in the frigid waters and were fortunate to have the comfort of a hot jacuzzi to warm them up. We enjoyed delicious meals prepared by the resident chef and shared stories with guests of the lodge.

On one peaceful evening as the sunset cast is golden hue across the water and we dined in luxury, I was in awe of the beauty and serenity of an eagle perched on a tall cedar. The silhouette of the bird etched against the gold and blue sky reminded me of the beauty of creation and the patience of eagle waiting for a meal to swim by. I was reminded of the wealth of ancestors and the opportunity for the world to experience the awe and wonder of a King Pacific Sunset.

Janet Vanderhoof, a military brat, by her own definition, was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in l951. She currently resides in rural Northern California, surrounding herself with nature and her inspiration for landscape painting.

It wasn’t until her youngest was born with Down’s syndrome that she began to reexamine her life and begin exploring a long-dormant desire to study art. “Finally, at 38, I decided to follow my bliss.” Janet went on to earn a B.A. from San Jose State University. She continues her education in fine art through additional college classes, seminars and private lessons.

Janet Vanderhoof is a Colorist and Regionalist, influenced by the Fauves, the German Expressionists and the School of Color and Light, introduced by Hawthorne and Henry Henche, an approach originated by Monet.

She likes to call her work “Modern Impressionism.” Her oil and acrylic paintings are dramatic, with attention to composition, color and light, showing large flat planes of color, offset by areas of bold expressionistic strokes. She enjoys using rich neutrals to counter balance the use of pure bright color. “My first love is color; it is the emotional force behind all my paintings.” I love to paint figures and landscapes, capturing moments and memories.

 Her digital work has brought another dimension to her creativity. This is where Janet captures the whimsical, channeling personality and figures from another world. Although, it is a completely different style, it does capture her love of design, color and composition.

Janet Vanderhoof is an award-winning artist. Artaissance, a Berkshire Hathaway Company, now publishes her giclees. She has been shown by numerous galleries, but now has her studio in Morgan Hill, CA. You may visit her studio by appointment for originals, prints and commissions.

Dan L. Hays is a gifted writer who has been pursuing his craft for more than 25 years. His passion has always been writing, but he had a writing block that he could not understand for many years. He wrote two books that publishers were interested in, but he backed away and the books were never published.

Lost creativity and the effects of family alcoholism are just two of the elements of the story he explores in his first published book, Freedom’s Just Another Word, which chronicles events around the time of his father’s death. It is the first of a cycle of 7 books about healing old wounds with his father. That cycle will culminate with Nothing Left to Lose, written in 1993, about a critical turning point in his father’s life, depicted from a perspective of forgiveness and admiration.

My life was spinning out of control. A force was at work I could not understand. I was trying to put pieces together, to remember⎯some whisper of a memory, about my Dad, when I was young.
